Pendidikan, pada esensinya, merupakan upaya yang disengaja secara sistematis dan terencana untuk memajukan kemampuan, sikap, dan perilaku individu dalam konteks masyarakatnya (Dictionary of Education). Bila digambarkan pendidikan sebagai sebuah proses pemanusiaan bagi generasi muda. Dalam konteks proses pendidikan, terdapat dua entitas utama, yaitu pendidik dan anak didik, di mana pendidik, khususnya dalam konteks pendidikan formal, disebut sebagai guru. Kehadiran guru menjadi esensial dalam kelangsungan proses pendidikan, karena mereka memegang peran kunci sebagai pelaksana utama pendidikan. Suksesnya pendidikan sangat tergantung pada peran guru dalam pelaksanaannya, oleh karena itu, guru harus senantiasa mengembangkan diri guna memastikan penerimaan subyek didik terhadap pengetahuan, keterampilan, sikap, dan nilai mencapai tingkat maksimal.
